Unit 4: Loud and Heavy by Cody Jinks Music Analysis

Song: Loud and Heavy by Cody Jinks

 Lyrics-

In Cody Jink's song Loud and Heavy, the lyrics helped carry the song. The lyrics added to this song help create a visual for the listeners to experience. While Cody Jinks has a lot of good music, he portrays a vivid image in the reader's mind, opening by talking about what he sees and hears. While he explains the views and objects in the story, he also describes different objects, such as cars, when he uses expressive details like "pistons pumping." While this has been a song that many have found entertaining, the inspiration of the song comes from his son. According to an interview between Bobby Bone Show hosts and Cody Jinks, the song was inspired by his son. When they were headed to tractor supply Jink's son "kept saying 'loud thunder, heavy rain!'" Knowing this adds more depth to the lyrics that this song offers.

Beat-

Throughout the song, Cody Jinks maintains a steady beat that is consistent with most people's heart rate. The beat starts off with what sounds like a steady thump before the acoustic guitar starts playing. While the song and lyrics do sound nice, there is always an underlying sense of the beat steadily throughout the song. This helps give the song a more relaxed/calming tempo.

Tempo-

The tempo is known as the speed of the beat and how it can keep the song moving forward. The tempo of this song according to Song BPM is "82 BPM." While this may seem a little fast for a resting heart rate, most people's heart rate ranges between 60 and 95 bmp throughout the day. Due to the speed of the beat, it does not get people's hearts moving quicker but rather keeps them in a more restful state.

  1. It is very loving to hear that artists take what their children say and turn it into music. When listening to this song and doing some of my own research, I found that this song represents a lot of perseverance and resistance that Cody may have gone through as well. In the lyric "I haven’t slept in three damn days / Yeah, but who needs that anyway" to me it seems obvious something keeps him up at night and may be struggling with something. And not to misrepresent anything but I do think that a lot of men in general do not show emotion with others so being able to in his music might be his way of showing that he went through something and was inspired (I mean we have seen all of the break up songs in the past from other artists). One more thing I wanted to mention was that in this song, for it having such a deeper meaning when you read into the lyrics, I agree that it has a restful, calming tone as it is not intense and does not have a wide range of tone.
